Students model what happens if the put is assigned and hypothetical shares are purchased.
Step 3 — Covered Call
Students learn how a call can be sold against shares already owned.
Step 4 — Potential Sale of Shares

  • Market price

  • Volatility

  • Risk

  • Put

  • Strike price

  • Premium

  • Expiration

  • Assignment

  • Exercise

  • Underlying stock

  • In-the-money

  • Out-of-the-money

  • Time value

  • Intrinsic value

Do not start with actual trading.

Start with paper contracts.

DAY 11 — THE OPTIONS WHEEL

The Youth TradeFitness Signature Strategy

Teach the Wheel conceptually:

STEP 1

Select an underlying asset according to predefined educational criteria.

STEP 2

Sell a cash-secured put in a simulated account.

STEP 3

If the put expires without assignment:

Receive the simulated premium and evaluate the result.

STEP 4

If assigned:

The simulated account purchases shares at the strike price, according to the contract.

STEP 5

Against those shares, simulate a covered call.

STEP 6

If the shares are called away:

Return to the put stage.

Visual Model

Cash → Cash-Secured Put → Shares → Covered Call → Cash

Then repeat.

Key Risk Lesson

The Wheel does not eliminate losses.

If the underlying stock falls substantially, the premium received may not offset the decline in the shares.

DAY 12 — OPTIONS WHEEL TEAM LAB

Teams receive identical fictional portfolios.

Each team gets different market scenarios.

Scenario A

Stock rises.

Scenario B

Stock falls sharply.

Scenario C

Stock trades sideways.

Scenario D

Option expires.

Scenario E

Shares are assigned.

Teams determine:

What happens next?

DAY 13 — RISK MANAGEMENT

This should be one of the most important days.

Teach:

  • Position sizing

  • Diversification

  • Assignment risk

  • Volatility

  • Downside risk

  • Liquidity

  • Concentration

  • Emotional decision-making

  • Losses

  • Opportunity cost

"Risk Before Reward" Rule

Before discussing how much money a strategy might make, students must identify:

"How can I lose money?"

Team Exercise

Each team identifies five risks in a fictional Wheel strategy.

DAY 14 — TRADING PSYCHOLOGY

Teach:

  • Fear

  • Greed

  • FOMO

  • Revenge trading

Participants learn:

  • Strike price

  • Expiration

  • Assignment

  • Upside limitation

Critical Concept

The option premium does not protect the investor from all losses in the underlying stock.

DAY 11 — COVERED-CALL SIMULATION

Participants use a fictional portfolio.

Example:

100 simulated shares.

They compare:

Scenario 1

Stock remains below strike.

Scenario 2

Stock rises above strike.

Scenario 3

Stock falls substantially.

Scenario 4

Call is assigned.

Participants calculate the outcome.

DAY 12 — INCOME VS. GROWTH

Discuss the tradeoff.

A covered call may generate option premium but can also limit upside if the shares are called away.

Exercise

Participants compare three fictional approaches:

A — Hold shares

B — Covered call

C — Cash

Then discuss:

"What risks and tradeoffs does each approach have?"
